What’s in our name

Esken - to ascend, climb and rise

Previously known as Stobart Energy, we wanted a name that, like us, was different, impactful and reflected our focus on renewable fuel.

The name is taken from an ancient British word from pre-Celtic language: ‘eskenn’. ‘Eskenn’ means ‘to ascend, to climb and to rise’. It’s related to the Latin: ‘acsendo’ and the modern Welsh ’esgyn’. To make it simpler, clearer and completely ours, we removed the final letter to arrive at ‘Esken’. 

We chose Renewables because both our present and our future is focused on this important work; supplying renewable fuel to the UK. Right now we supply a critical renewable fuel – biomass. In the future, we aim to establish further opportunities to use our expertise and infrastructure to supply other types of renewable fuel.
